Why do some council members insist on appointing from outside their districts??

Maybe the City of Laredo EPA should start by cleaning our city government
As it became evident during a recent city council meeting, our council representatives have apparently taken a liking to appointing non-district residents to the city's committees and boards. Obviously, these ill-advised actions are in complete contradiction to the concept of representative government: that is we elect them and they in turn appoint people who will represent us.

Take a look and see if your council members are appointing their own constituents or "outsiders".  Here's a look at this coming Monday's appointments: From the City of Laredo agenda for Monday, Jan. 17, 2011.

VI. APPOINTMENTS TO COMMISSIONS, BOARDS AND COMMITTEES

e. Appointment by Council Member Alejandro "Alex" Perez, Jr., of Ms. Laura Arce to the Laredo Commission for Women.

f. Appointment by Council Member Alejandro "Alex" Perez, Jr., of Ms. Lorraine Withoss Laurel to the Historic District/Landmark Board.

g. Appointment by Council Member Juan Narvaez of Mr. Victor TreviƱo, Jr. to Economic Development Advisory Committee.

  1. Irritates me too. I still think there should be an application process where QUALIFICATIONS are also considered before an appointment. Is it easy to appoint buddies and other council recommendations? Sure it is - but it is about getting someone who really can represent the district and your philosophy of governance, not what is easy.

  2. I couldn't have said it better myself. I really don't know if those people I listed live in their districts. Maybe someone out there can tell me. If Perez follows the trent, they probably don't live in district 3.
