WASHINGTON -- In a news release sent out Monday, U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes said House Speaker John Boehner needs to take into account the violence in his home state before "tarnishing the image of border communities."  Reyes, D-El Paso, said border communities remain among the safest places to live in America.  "As his office asserts that Congress cannot consider reforming our broken immigration system until border violence is under control, the fact remains that the six largest cities of Ohio all have higher rates of violence and crime than every major city along the U.S.-Mexico border," Reyes said.

Tuesday, President Obama will visit El Paso and make a speech focusing on immigration reform.

According to data released by Reyes' office, Dayton's homicides -- city population 141,527 -- totaled 35 in 2010. Data indicates that in 2010, Texas' four major border cities -- El Paso, Laredo, Brownsville and McAllen -- totaled 26 homicides, according to the data.

Reyes pointed out that El Paso is "the largest border city in Texas and the safest large city in America."

"I hope the President's visit will help expose Republicans' distorted rhetoric on border violence, and renew the push for much-needed reforms to our immigration system that are long overdue," Reyes said.

  3. I would bet real money that Sylvester Reyes and other politicians have stated over and over again in committee hearings that "the border needs more and more money for security against border violence."

I see where on the congressman's webpage he touts the $1.4billion in border security money.

When you hear that over and over you think that the border is unsafe. Maybe that is why the speaker said what he did.

Our politicians (all of them) want to have things both ways, bragging on how safe their city is on the one hand, but asking congress for more money for security.

  4. Our politicians are always begging for money up in Washington, they are trying to have it both ways- no doubt about it. But Boehner is wrong in his statement. Two wrongs do not make a right. Boehner should retract his statement because it can be disproven by figures.
