Native Laredoan serves as President of College Democrats of America

Alejandra Salinas, 20, of Laredo, Texas  has a compelling life story: She grew up in a conservative family, attended Catholic school in a border town that served, she says, as “a daily reminder of the opportunities that make our nation unique.” At UT, she has been active in state and national issues such as guns on campus and the Dream Act. She’s already led get-out-the-vote efforts and organized campus awareness of the 2010 census.

Salinas serves as the President of the College Democrats of America (CDA). Growing up in a border community, Alejandra had a daily reminder of the opportunities that make our nation unique. Alejandra’s political introduction came in the form of grassroots organizing for the proposed immigration reform of 2006.

Elected in August 2010, she previously served as the Vice President of the Texas College Democrats and CDA’s Hispanic Caucus Chair. It is here she learned the true mobilizing power of College Democrats. Alejandra played a key role in two major lobbying efforts that drew students from across the state of Texas to tackle key student issues such as tuition, guns on campus, and the Dream Act. In the summer of 2009, Alejandra also served as the Chairman and Executive Director’s intern at the DNC.

A junior majoring in Management at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business, Alejandra is committed to enhancing the outreach and diversity of the College Democrats of America.
